Forest Glade Gardens – Mount Macedon

Forest Glade Gardens – Mount Macedon

By Diane Beddison

I visited a wonderful garden on the weekend.

Forest Glade is a large (5.6ha) 100 year old garden in Mount Macedon.

Autumn colours in trees and shrubs were a highlight with Japanese maples being the stars. Another highlight was the collection of amazing statues strategically placed throughout the garden with the more recent being metal statues of a musical theme.

The English style themed garden was a pleasure to explore with its spaciousness, mature trees and long borders. Each border consists of generous plantings of just a few species. There were plenty of Rhododendrons and Azaleas including Mollis Azaleas. There is however a large range of plants, and extra diversity is provided with massed displays of shade-loving plants in the Woodland themed garden.

The Japanese themed garden was my favourite. The mix of plants, pond with steppers across it and the orange bridge were magic.  Once over the bridge, topiary Buxus of varying shapes plus Pieris and low growing Azaleas keep lightly clipped, created a peaceful green garden.

At the bottom of the garden, you wander along pathways with handmade stone retaining walls through a lush cool temperate rain forest.

I am looking forward to visiting in spring time to see everything in flower. Words can’t adequately describe the scale and variety of this garden. So if you enjoy gardens, or you just want a peaceful place to take the family, visit this garden soon and allow plenty of time. Forest Glade is open 7 days a week.
